Pace Building Automation Solutions

Building Automation…With Existing Infrastructure

Simplified Building Automation... With Single-Pair Ethernet

Building automation systems provide numerous benefits for industrial and manufacturing facilities including lower operating costs, increased energy efficiency and smaller carbon footprints, enhanced safety and security, increased productivity, and so much more. But making the leap from isolated legacy control systems to a unified automation platform has its challenges.  High installation costs and integration difficulties are lead the list, as the process of networking previously siloed systems can be monumental.

T1L Ethernet connectivity provides a cost-efficient and effective solution that facilitates the creation of high-speed IP networks using the existing twisted pair wiring already installed in most buildings.

Benefits & Practical Aspects of Implementing SPE Network Solutions

For Existing & New Two-Wire Cable Infrastructures

Anatomy of T1L Technology

T1L Ethernet uses a single pair of twisted copper wires for data transmission versus traditional Ethernet which requires two or four pairs or wires. Commonly referred to as 10BASE-T1L or IEEE 802.3cg, T1L single pair Ethernet (SPE) is ideal for numerous building automation and industrial applications where IIOT edge devices may be installed at long distances from their control points.

T1L Ethernet reduces cabling complexity and cost by leveraging existing infrastructure and eliminating repeaters, enabling enhanced data transmission and power distribution to support virtually any type or number of edge devices across myriad types of system management and control platforms.

T1L key characteristics include:

  • Single-Pair Power and Data Connection
  • Extended Network Range Without Repeaters
  • Seamless IoT Integration
  • Industry Standard

Five Key Reasons to Use T1L

  • Leverage existing infrastructure: T1L can utilize existing single-pair cabling to transmit power and data over a single cable, eliminating the need to rip and replace installed cabling, and significantly reducing installation costs and complexity
  • Long-distance connectivity: T1L extends Ethernet networks up to 1km/ 1,000m /3,280’ to connect edge devices across large facilities or located in remote areas
  • Point to Point IIoT Integration: Each edge devices can have a unique IP address, allowing for seamless integration with IT infrastructure, remote monitoring and management
  • Enhanced bandwidth: T1L supports high bandwidth edge devices, enabling the deployment of more advanced data collection edge devices, better system management and control, operational versatility and efficiency, and advanced analytics
  • Supports safe environments: T1L low voltage infrastructure is ideally suited for use in hazardous areas such as refineries, utility rooms and other areas that may house combustible material

Making the T1L Connection with Altronix PACE

Altronix PACE SPE (Single Pair Ethernet) T1L media converter/adaptors enable connection of 10Base-T1L, IEE802.3cg compliant IIoT devices to an Ethernet network. Long distance headend to remote-end device cabling can be achieved to over 1km/ 1,000m /3,280’.

In addition to new SPE (UTP) Ethernet network installations, upgrading of legacy networks, i.e. LONworks, RS485, 4-20mA Control Loops, etc. can be achieved using the existing two wire cabling, thus saving rip and replace reinstallation costs.

Operationally, the PACE T1L media converter/adaptors connect to a POE midspan/endspan switch at the headend and pass network data from the switch via UTP to the remote T1L edge device.

 Features include:
  • Provides SPE (single pair Ethernet) over twisted pair (2-wire, UTP or shielded) or 16/2 AWG or higher wire up to 1km/ 1,000m /3,280’
  • Utilize twisted pair for new installations or retrofit of IP devices over existing twisted pair cabling
  • 10Base-T1L, IEE802.3cg protocol with 10Mbps data transmission speed
  • Provides 12VDC/24VDC to power compatible devices
  • UL and CE listed
  • NDAA, TAA Compliant
  • Lifetime Warranty
